Thunderbird American Indian Hoop Dance Workshop
With Marie McKinney
Mondays, February 27th - March 12th 2012
5:30-7pm
$25 single session, $65 for 3 sessions prepaid
American Indian Hoop Dancing is a storytelling dance from Taos, New Mexico, enjoyed at Native American Pow Wows, celebrating the circle of creation. Beginning with a warm-up that builds flexibility, stamina, strength and balance, sharpen your footwork and arm strength, while transforming the hoops from animals to forces of nature and back, bringing life to the hoops in a continuous motion.
Appropriate for beginners and dance professionals, you will learn to dance with 1 hoop then 2 then 3 hoops, while learning exercises to increase longevity of external muscles and internal organs. Elements of Native American culture, regalia, music and musicality for dance will briefly be covered in each workshop. Diameter of hoops used should measure from the heel to one knee length above the knee. Participants will be able to use those hoops provided or purchase hoops (3 for $20). Hoops are available online from Marie (please be sure to specify your height). Participants will also invited to join upcoming Native American events in the New York area.
Marie will hold another workshop in Hoop Dancing at Lotus from April 9th to April 30th. Please check back in March for complete information on this workshop.
